WHO has designated 33 national and regional regulatory authorities as WHO Listed Authorities (WLAs) to uphold the highest standards for medicines and vaccines. This brings the total to 36 regulatory authorities from 34 Member States since the initiative’s launch in March 2022.
Newly approved WLAs include the U.S. FDA and the European Medicines Regulatory Network (EMRN), comprising regulatory bodies from 30 European countries.
Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority (HSA), previously designated as a WLA in October 2023, has been approved for an expanded scope of functions.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, hailed this progress in improving access to safe and effective medicines and vaccines.
The decision follows recommendations by WHO’s technical advisory group on WHO Listed Authorities (TAG-WLA) after evaluations confirming advanced performance by these authorities.
Dr. Yukiko Nakatani, Assistant Director-General, Access to Medicines and Health Products, emphasized the transformative impact of WLAs in ensuring quality and safety.
WLAs cover all regulatory functions for medicines and vaccines, signifying compliance with international standards and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Several regulatory authorities are pending evaluations for WHO Listed Authorities designation.
